Family and friends gathered Monday, April 9, at the First Baptist Church in Pensacola, Florida to honor the former Baptist College of Florida President Joseph P. DuBose, Jr., age 87, who passed away on April 4. DuBose served as President of what was then called Baptist Bible Institute (BBI) in Graceville from 1977 to 1990. He is survived by his wife Sybil and three sons.

"Dr. Joe Dubose served as President during a pivotal time in the life of the College," stated current BCF President Thomas A. Kinchen. "It was a time in which the school was becoming a more broad-based Christian institution of higher education. He provided the leadership necessary to make the moves that were needed without losing the distinctively Christian posture of the school. We will be forever grateful for his contributions."

While serving as president of The Baptist College of Florida, the institution transition from training "preachers" and granting high school diplomas in pastoral ministry and religious education to offering accredited degrees in various areas of ministry and service. DuBose facilitated the expansion of the Graceville campus including the construction of more student housing, increased classroom space, and an education center for children's pre-school programs. During Dubose's presidency, the school started to re-focus recruitment and training to include educating men and women for multiple areas of service and greater areas of leadership and responsibility.

Dubose was from Orangeburg, South Carolina, and attended The Citadel in Charleston. He graduated from the University of South Carolina with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. He was ordained to the Gospel Ministry in 1950 and earned a Bachelor of Divinity, Master of Theology, and Doctor of Ministry degree from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.

DuBose had been serving as pastor of the East Hill Baptist Church in Pensacola since 1963 prior to becoming president of BBI in May, 1977. He pastored churches in Indiana, North Carolina and Florida and served on the board of trustees at BBI prior to his election.
