Nathan Floyd Shaffett, son of BCF Library Services Director John Shaffett, admires the new mural in the children’s reading room.

The Ida J. McMillan Library at The Baptist College of Florida (BCF) in Graceville recently received a huge splash of color thanks to the Public Services Librarian Marcia Duggar and BCF Music Major Katrina Graham. For the past several weeks, Duggar and Graham have been working vigorously painting a mural for the children’s reading section in the library.

According to Duggar, the mural is labeled “Roots and Wings,” which are two things that parents should give to their children. “I am extremely passionate about art and teaching,” beamed Duggar when speaking to guests as they viewed the mural. “John Shaffett [Director of Library Services at BCF] believes that whatever talents and abilities you have they can be used in the library.” With that in mind, Duggar was inspired to paint the mural upon researching different pieces of artwork online and stumbling across a picture of a tree with sprouting roots. From that encounter, Duggar and Graham proceeded to design a similar piece large enough to paint on the wall in the children’s room.

“We are excited about our new mural and its enhancement to the library,” stated Shaffett. “Marcia Duggar is doing a great job in improving the library.” The mural is approximately seven feet by four feet with a green leafed tree on the top of a hill whose roots extend deep into the ground. Behind the tree is a colorful yellow and orange sunrise with rays shooting off into the distance and birds flying through the air. “I want kids to come into the library and feel happy,” stated Graham as she was painting one of the sun’s rays. “The design of the tree resembles the tree of life. So maybe someone will have the opportunity to use the mural to share Jesus with someone else.”

The library staff recently hosted an open house for visitors to view the mural and learn more about the library located on The Baptist College of Florida campus.  For more information, call 850.263.3261 ext. 424 or visit the website at www.baptistcollege.edu.
